Description

BASF, “The Chemical Company” is seeking exceptional candidates for a Process Safety Specialist as a member of the Central Hub EHS team. This position is located in Elyria, OH. BASF's Elyria site has a reputation as a producer of consistently high-quality custom and proprietary catalysts and specialty pigments and is experiencing dynamic growth. As an example, the site recently held a Grand Opening for its brand new investment: an on-site 70,000 sq. foot Lithium-ion Battery Materials production Plant, designed to produce cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries for the automotive industry. The site is located on 22+ acres and employs approximately 185 people and multiple contractors at any given time. The extensive regulatory requirements create a challenge to achieve, maintain and enhance world class EHS performance.

The selected individual will join a team of 10 EHS Professionals responsible for overall management of the EHS programs at sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Kentucky. The selected individual will report to the Central Hub Team Leader at Elyria. Under the hub structure, they will have indirect interaction with other sites in the Central hub, which is a group of sites supported under BASF’s shared services platform. They will also interact with EHS experts and professionals who support all of BASF’s North American sites and businesses through participation on the Extended Process Safety Center of Expertise.

Principal Responsibilities –

1.
Lead, coordinate, implement, and support Process Safety programs at the Elyria site, and across multiple sites and business groups within the group of sites support by the Central EHS Hub.

2.
Provide technical and regulatory expertise to ensure compliance, safe work places and practices, and continuous improvement of Process Safety programs. Advise site management of compliance concerns.

3.
Facilitate the sharing of programs, procedures, tools, and successfully demonstrated practices within the EHS Hub. Implement standardized EHS processes within the Hub.

4.
Ensure incorporation of BASF Process Safety philosophies during the safety reviews for new processes and process modifications.

5.
Provide strategic direction of Process Safety issues pertaining to the EHS Hub sites and businesses. Coordinate with the BASF subject matter experts on development of processes and initiatives to ensure continuous improvement in Process Safety.

6.
Provide primary point of contact for all Process Safety related issues within the Central Hub, including the process safety review process, facility siting, and interpretations associated with OSHA’s Process Safety Management/EPA’s Chemical Accident Prevention (RMP).

7.
Participate in process hazard analyses, incident investigations, and capital project reviews

8.
Lead EHS Community work teams or task forces (i.e., inter/intra-Hub expertise and Community of Practice) including acting as Hub process owner for assigned EHS processes.

9.
Support interface with regulatory agencies and third parties, as needed, on compliance and enforcement issues.

10.
Lead, coordinate, and implement the required updates to Risk Management Plans.

11.
Support implementation of the Responsible Care® Management System.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

1.
Technical engineering or science BS degree required; other BS degrees considered if candidate has significant relevant experience

2.
Strong expertise in regulatory and technical aspects of Process Safety is required.

3.
Must have at least 5 years of experience in PSM and RMP.

4.
Experience within a Chemical Manufacturing environment is a strong plus.

5.
Experience/training in Process Hazards Analysis desired.

6.
Expertise and experience in Occupational Safety, Security, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Response Management, and environmental regulations and technology are desired.

7.
Experience with incident investigation and root cause analysis is required.

8.
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

9.
Must be able to interact with, motivate, and influence operations and management personnel
