This position has primary responsibility of carrying out product development and research by
- Synthesize polyurethane polymers for new product development and research
- Prepare pigment dispersions, inks, coatings and novel polymeric materials
- Conduct applications testing, including performance and physical characterization testing for polymer films and emulsions
- Prepare, package and ship samples for customer evaluations

This position will safely conduct new product development and applications experiments under the direction of the scientists on the team.

o Safely synthesize new polymer products. Characterize the polymers, prepare final ink and coating formulations, perform applications tests. Document all work in the form of laboratory reports and in the laboratory notebook.

o Set up, calibrate, operate and maintain various pieces of laboratory and test equipment

o Set up and maintain a safe, efficient laboratory work place.

o Assist in various activities required for efficient laboratory operation and sample generation

o Prepare, label, package and ship customer samples.

o Conduct routine data analysis

o Support scale-up of processes to manufacturing and commercialization when appropriate

BASF, “The Chemical Company” is seeking candidates for an Environmental Specialist position in the Ohio, Michigan, Canada Hub. This position is located in Wyandotte, MI.

The selected individual reporting to the Hub EHS Team Leader will lead and support Environmental programs for various sites in the Ohio-Michigan-Canada Hub. The selected individual must have expertise in environmental management, with a focus on coordinating and completing environmental reporting, including air permits (Title V, state operating permits) and MACT, EPCRA 311, 312, and 313, NPDES (wastewater discharge and storm water) and hazardous waste. Additional experience in Process Safety or Occupational Safety is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities:
- Working with our manufacturing and laboratory partners, provide technical and regulatory expertise to ensure environmental compliance, continuous improvement and leadership of environmental programs.
- Assist sites with implementation of standardized environmental processes at assigned sites.
- Support the interface with regulatory agencies and third parties, as needed, on compliance and enforcement issues.
- Use of the RegAction ® tool to ensure environmental tasks are completed at the sites and to assemble and document the Hub Reporting calendar.
- Conduct monthly Title V air permit calculations, and monthly Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) Air Pollution Control Rule 290 demonstrations.
- EPCRA 311, 312 and 313 reporting.
- Prepare quarterly POTW Periodic Reports on compliance and monthly NPDES discharge monitoring reports (DMRs).
- Prepare hazardous waste Biennial Reports.
- Maintenance and continued development of data capture tools needed to ensure sustainable systematic data acquisition for compilation of environmental reports for the Hub.
- Obtain all relevant permit, inventory and consumption data from SAP database transactions and other sources.
- HUB BASF Responsible Care (RC) report coordination and Hub participation in data management projects.
- Development of key performance indicator’s (KPI’s) for the tracking and reporting of environmental performance in the Hub. These reports will be presented to Site Managers and operations staff for their information in the goal setting process from year to year.
- Tracking, trending and reporting Hub Process Safety KPI’s performance against established Corporate KPI’s.

The selected individual reporting to the Hub EHS Team Leader will provide professional, technical environmental support to Wyandotte Site operations. The position will provide supervisory support to the Wyandotte waste management service organization. The selected individual will contribute to maintaining site environmental compliance through coordination and support of the site’s compliance assurance process, and providing oversight of the site’s waste service provider. The selected individual will also be responsible for ensuring compliance of the site’s NPDES permit including management of the site’s wastewater program.

Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement processes and procedures designed to ensure the Wyandotte site’s compliance with Environmental permits, and other corporate and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the implementation and maintenance of the RegAction® WebCMS® process for the Wyandotte and provide assistance to other Hub sites.
- Review, revise, and develop training in the site’s electronic training system (Mockingbird) on the applicable environmental rules and requirements for Manufacturing, Laboratory and Services personnel.
- Identify and assist in the investigation of air (Title V, NESHAP, etc.), water (NPDES waste water permit and POTW Permit), storm water, and hazardous waste management deviations. Participate in the root cause analysis (RCA) process and assist in the development and implementation of corrective actions to prevent/reduce deviations for the sustainable operations of the units/site.
- Work with the units and sites to identify continuous improvement opportunities to reduce waste.
- Collect and submit for analysis all compliance samples for waste water discharges at the Wyandotte North and South Works.

- Collect and submit operational waste water samples collected at the North and South Works for the purposes of identifying process upsets.

The team works closely with other research teams, development teams and business units of BASF, inside and outside the US. In addition, the team maintains and supports numerous collaborations with non-BASF partners, incl. universities and other research organizations.

The Associate Scientist will perform and support biotechnological research projects within the Microbiology & Industrial Biotechnology Research Group. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work well on his own or as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Major Responsibilities
- Perform microbiology and molecular biology and genetic engineering experiments in bacteria, yeasts and fungi for the development of new processes and new products.
- Interface with other research and development units
- Participate in product development / cross functional teams
- Handle complex tasks simultaneously and stick to time milestones and completion dates
- Maintain laboratory documentation in accordance to required scientific, regulatory and intellectual property requirements
- Prepare scientific reports and presentations as required
- Continually develop skill sets for new technologies, methods etc.

Required:
- B.S. degree in biology or molecular biology with minimum 1 year lab experience, or A.A.S. degree in biology or molecular biology with minimum 2 years of working experience in a molecular biology laboratory
- Experience with PCR, DNA isolation and purification, gene cloning
- Experience in DNA sequence data analysis, incl. analysis and planning software
- Experience in microbiological laboratory methods
- Good understanding of biochemistry and microbial metabolism
- Thorough knowledge of research principles and techniques
- Ability to work independently and under time constraints
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and teamwork and communication skills

Desired:
- Experienced in protein biochemistry, production or purification
- Experience with microbial fermentations

In the Materials Science group at our Iselin R&D Center, the qualified candidate will lead research and development programs in heterogeneous catalysis for new and improved products for BASF. These programs will include catalyst design and implementation as well as evaluation of catalyst performance using laboratory reactors. May supervise one or more technicians or chemists.

- Ph.D. in chemical engineering with 1+ years related experience in kinetics and catalysis, MS degree in chemical engineering with 3+ years related experience in kinetics and catalysis or BS degree in chemistry with 5+ years related experience in kinetics and catalysis

- A mechanical aptitude and hardware/reactor skills required
