Where the Chemistry Happens…

The Associate Chemist position supports the interface between Manufacturing, Research, and Commercial groups within the Chemical Catalysts business. The position is responsible for new product commercialization, new manufacturing process research, and process optimization. The successful candidate will be a member of the chemical catalyst R&D group at the Beachwood, OH site. The Chemical Catalysts R&D group conducts research, scale-up, and manufacturing support for catalyst formulations to be processed in the variety of global manufacturing facilities or tollers with the result of catalysts that can be used in chemical processes.

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Support process and product development efforts.
- Liaise between multiple groups to ensure successful project startup and implementation.
- Work closely with Manufacturing, Marketing, EHS, Finance, and Research for scale-up of new products and major refinements of existing products
- Collaborate with lead engineers and paraprofessionals during team activities such as plant trials and project meetings.
- Develop and communicate detailed project plans and project proposals, communicate and present project results, and lead the commercialization or implementation of projects of responsibility.
- Address EHS requirements at BASF and other manufacturing sites to meet the standards for a Zero Incident Mindset.
- Proactively raise the standard for EHS at all sites for all projects
- Make decisions independently with a problem/solution-type approach.
- Represent the Chemical Catalysts group in production support activities and teams.
- Recommend approaches based on conventional and novel approaches
- Report results to Management for approval to implement in existing facilities, or consult capital project development for new facilities

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry combined with at least 7 years of applicable experience with the formulation of catalysts for chemicals processes; OR Master’s degree and 4 years of experience; OR a Ph.D. with applicable research and/or industrial experience.
- Previous experience in chemical engineering, inorganic chemistry, or surface chemistry
- Familiarity in forming of inorganic materials (tableting, extrusion), ceramics, ion exchange, liquid solid separation, calcination, drying, material science, and/or prior catalyst manufacturing experience is a plus.
- Proven track record of demonstrating initiative, a drive for results, solving complex problems by identifying and enrolling appropriate resources to create effective teams, and by using individual creativity and innovation.
- Experience in laboratory and pilot-scale preparation of formed base or precious metal catalysts on alumina/minerals, zeolites, and base metal oxide supports is a plus.
- Firm understanding of physical and chemical properties testing of formed catalysts, and interpretation for developing improved catalysts.
