Where the Chemistry Happens…

Sales at BASF revolves around the customer experience and driving profitable growth. The foundation for this is a strong team that brings specific application, industry and market knowledge in order to understand the diverse markets where we play and build trusting and satisfying customer relationships.

Reporting to the North American Sales Director, the Zone Manager Refinish position is accountable to lead a team of Regional Business Managers, Strategic Account Managers, Account Representatives, Business Development Managers and Technical Specialists to deliver profitable organic growth in the Automotive Refinish sector across California and the Western US (WA, OR, ID, UT, NM, AZ, NV).

Key challenges for the role include motivating, coaching and leading a team through significant industry change and through challenges associated with a declining market volume. Managing complexity created through a 3rd party distribution network with differing agendas and balancing account retention with new account gains with shops ranging in size from $1M to $50M in sales out are key tasks that the role must navigate.

The role requires the individual to be a manager of managers, while also being a direct manager for individuals with specific functional roles. This multi-level leadership role creates significant complexity, necessitating flexible, proven leadership capability. The role interacts with high networth owners and C-Suite executives that own and lead our largest and most strategic customers.

The Zone Manager Refinish is fully accountable for hiring, developing and terminating employees. The position has top line sales and customer financing responsibility. The role also has asset responsibility for BASF office/training facilities located across the zone. This includes EHS, operations and maintenance of the site with limited support from BASF functional departments.

Formula for success. You will…..
- Identify, recruit, coach and develop talent to achieve a high performing team
- Deliver profitable organic growth through the retention and growth of existing accounts and developing new distribution partners and customer
- Provide commercial input to the Distribution Strategy team to develop channel strategies per market.
- Identify key business risks, propose mitigation measures, gain approval and execute plans to minimize BASF risk
- Drive alignment by connecting sales functions to marketing, technical, supply chain, manufacturing and other key functions
- Manage external relations within geography of responsibility including 3rd party vendors, universities, enforcement agencies and insurance companies
- Manage training asset footprint to budget and lead team to execute training programs for distribution partners and collision repair center customers.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for success. What we look for in you…..
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree in engineering, business, sales or marketing discipline, preferred
- MBA preferred
- Minimum combined 10 years of effective sales leadership and business management experience required
- Demonstrated experience of strategy execution required
- Experience in managing financials including P&L statements, expense control, forecasting, budgeting required
- Experience directly managing others required
- Automotive refinish/collision repair experience is required
- Experience with use of technology and data systems in decision making to increase field sales force productivity highly preferred
- Best in class verbal and written communication skills
- Conflict management skills
- Demonstrated ability to influence multiple levels both internally (sales, marketing, controlling, supply chain and manufacturing both across NA and globally) and externally
- Ability to travel 75% of the time
- Ideal geographic location is Southern California (Los Angeles or San Diego) or the San Francisco Bay area. Residing in CA is required
