Where the Chemistry Happens…

We are seeking a Team Leader to join our Catalyst Division located in Iselin, NJ.

The Catalyst Division of BASF provides fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts and additives used globally in refineries to produce gasoline and other high value hydrocarbon products. Evaluation of these catalysts in our R&D laboratory is an integral part of the business process and provides valuable data to our customers directly, to our Sales & Marketing Teams, and to our Researchers.

Team Leader (1700741)

You will work with catalyst R&D, as well as technology and technical service teams on the business side to promote BASF’s Refining Catalyst business. You will direct the small scale catalyst evaluation team toward providing the highest quality data and service to our internal and external customers. This is achieved by analyzing the data and continuously seeking quality improvement in test methods and in the team’s execution of laboratory tests. You have a measure of accountability for the laboratory infrastructure and the unit operations within it. These are the specific unit operations that this team leader is accountable to maintain as well as to assure operational reliability:
- Small scale FCC catalyst deactivation units - fluid bed steaming reactors and cyclic metal deactivation units (CMDU)
- Bench scale FCC catalyst evaluation units (ACE and MAT),
- Gas Chromatographs for refinery gas and boiling point (Simulated Distillation) analysis, and other specialty applications
- Catalyst attrition testing - Air Jet (ASTM D5757) and Roller units

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Establish statistical reliability of catalyst test methods by using appropriate statistical analysis and then ensure that once established the reliability does not drift. Use the standard techniques of statistical process control to maintain a high standard of performance.
- Identify operational problems in catalyst evaluation by observing and studying system functioning and by performance results. Listen to and investigate complaints and suggestions from customers. Be integrally involved in troubleshooting the unit operations and procedures to achieve optimal results.
- Help achieve organizational goals by accepting ownership for executing new and different Technical Service requests, aimed at expanding customer acceptance of BASF catalysts to meet their individual refining needs.
- Maintain quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards, analyzing and resolving quality and customer service concerns, identifying trends, and in conjunction with the Technology team by leading the customer to catalyst solutions.
- Develop a cohesive team that helps the company achieve its strategic objectives. Accomplish staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
- Participate in interdepartmental teams to assure uniformity of testing results and methods across sites. One example would be the Quality Assurance Committee.
- Participate in cross functional teams aimed at continuously improving our ability to acquire, analyze, and automatically transmit catalyst evaluation results to our customers by the most efficient means possible.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
