The Performance Materials (PM) business unit has an opportunity at their manufacturing site at the Malcom, Iowa for an Operations Engineer.

Operations Engineer (1703335) – Malcom, IA

Responsibilities include execution of the site’s capital plan, as well as taking a lead role in resolving complex issues relative to production, quality, and maintenance, based on various aspects of engineering and related areas, with the purpose of increasing production, reducing costs, and achieving continuous improvement. The position assists in developing and influencing longer-term strategy for the site in the areas of expansion, de-bottlenecking, and optimization efforts. This role serves as the primary interface with outside engineering firms and other BASF engineering resources at the various technical support hubs.

The position provides daily assistance as needed to operations and maintenance around troubleshooting, determining root cause, and resolution of problems to meet the sites production commitments.

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Assist in developing scope, design (e.g., PFDs, P&IDs), and budgets for capital projects at the site.
- Assist during the construction, check-out and start-up phases for capital projects. Provide field support and review the work to ensure it is installed and functional, per design documents.
- Interface with purchasing, outside engineering firms, and vendors in the implementation and management of capital projects.
- Help production and/or maintenance in troubleshooting equipment issues, processing problems, and quality issues.
- Analyze processing cycle times and implement improvements to increase capacity and reduce cost.
- Serve as a key contact for other BASF technical service centers to provide guidance in carrying out capital projects requiring their assistance and/or management.
- Lead in solving longer-term complex issues and coordinates effort of other key functional groups involved.
- Engage with operators and maintenance technicians to gather input and participation in problem solving and capital project development.
- Coordinate and review activities of Operations & Maintenance, and be responsible for the Bad Actor & Critical Spare Parts List.
- Provide off-hours support when called upon.
- Develops longer-term capital list and Process Optimization projects.
- Mentor and coach Summer Interns, including participants in the Professional Development Program.
- Understand safety requirements and applicability to maintenance/project activities. Function as a site safety champion, supporting our internal Living the Journey Exposure Reduction Process activities of, Foundations, Safety Contacts, Job Safety Briefings, and our PRISM programs

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering required with a minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in a manufacturing/technical environment in chemical type processing.
- Strong working knowledge of engineering- and manufacturing-related practices applied to improve operations.
- Capital investment/planning and property accounting procedures.
- SAP project management.
- Technical procurement processes.
- Project management capabilities including: Project Planning, Step Process Safety Reviews, VIP analysis tool, and cost estimating practices.
- Cost management in establishing/tracking and meeting project spending budgets.
- Understanding of engineering standards and how and when they should be applied.
- Generic competencies of: customer focus, teamwork, entrepreneurial acting, analytical thinking, innovative, influencing, and self-starting with minimal direction.
- Excellent communication skills using various forms of media.
- Good interpersonal skills required to interface with all levels in the organization.
- Candidate must be a self-starter with high level of results orientation.
