Where the Chemistry Happens…

In this role, you will be responsible for the development and execution of capital project improvements and asset replacements within our operating units at the McIntosh, AL site. You will work closely in teams consisting of Operations, Technology, Design, EHS, and Procurement personnel to ensure the safe and effective implementation of plant expansion, process debottlenecking, and infrastructure improvement projects.

The job scope includes Chemical Processing, Solid Material Handling, Site Infrastructure, and Waste Treatment facilities and equipment.

Project Engineer (1800455) – McIntosh, AL

As a Project Engineer, you will support capital investment and process safety projects for the McIntosh site. You will also be a focal point of responsibility, authority, and technical expertise of these capital investments and process safety improvements. This position is responsible for providing project management on assigned projects to assure proper design, procurement, and construction of capital and expense projects, usually <$5M, per regulatory and BASF standards.

The successful candidate for this position must be a results-oriented leader who can build strong working relationships and function effectively at all levels of the organization. S/he must be able to think strategically to mitigate risks, solve problems, and increase value.

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Develop project scopes, generate and/or obtain cost estimates, and prepare appropriation funding requests. Ensure appropriate project safety reviews are completed as required, both before and after approval. Utilize applicable Value-Based Engineering practices (VBE) to optimize project scope and costs.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental, safety, and health requirements, and promote a safe working environment for project execution.
- Maintain partnerships with assigned project manufacturing representatives to execute projects from initial scoping and funding, through detailed engineering and procurement, to start-up and commissioning, and final documentation and closure.
- Request and coordinate required process and discipline engineering and design resources, whether from the site, corporate groups, or outside engineering vendors, to prepare engineering design deliverables and to procure equipment, fabricated materials, and services.
- Adhere to current corporate and plant requirements for equipment/materials specifications and vendor preferences.
- Occasionally provide support as a discipline engineer for assigned projects, based on engineering degree, background, or experience
- Perform procurement activities as required, including preparing specifications, issuing requisitions, evaluating bids, and dealing with vendors; work with Procurement and comply with applicable guidelines.
- Request necessary construction and commissioning resources from Construction and others as required to install the scope of work.
- Monitor and support construction activities to ensure that projects are completed according to the design deliverables, quality standards, and plant requirements, and that pre-startup safety reviews are conducted.
- Follow-through to ensure that Operations achieves a successful project startup, and that any project-related action items are completed.
- Close projects per guidelines, and ensure proper documentation of files, records, databases, and drawings to meet regulatory and BASF requirements.
- Enlist Construction involvement during design effort and provide support to construction and others as required to install the scope of work.
- Promote identification of lessons learned from completed projects to improve work practices.
- Maintain SAP project data entries, monitor project progress through scheduling and other tools, perform project status reporting, and control spending through appropriate tracking, forecasting, and adjustments.
- Mentor and coach less experienced engineers, including participants in the Professional Development Program.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and at least 7 years of professional experience in chemical manufacturing or a related field.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Project Manager or Project Engineer.
- Working knowledge of chemical process equipment: rotating equipment, heat transfer, solids handling, storage tanks, and vessels.
- Demonstrated work experience in project execution with strong customer focus capabilities to closely interact with multiple organizational levels.
- Solid interpersonal, communication, administrative, personal motivation, and personal adaptability skills.
- Must have generic competencies of analytical thinking, communication, and interpersonal understanding, initiative, teamwork and team leadership, and quality orientation/attention to detail.
- Understanding of best practices for project management work processes.
- General computer skills.
- Professional engineering license is a plus.
- Familiarity with BASF Technical standards, accounting practices, and procurement policies.
- User knowledge of SAP project functions.
- Knowledge of the BASF Project Execution Roadmap is desirable.

Position will be filled at a level commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
