Where the Chemistry Happens…

We are seeking a Fermentation Manager to fill a critical role in the BASF Enzymes Research Team in our San Diego, CA site, an integral part of the BASF global Bioscience Research Platform. The Manager oversees the R&D fermentation and recovery group and is responsible for transferring processes from R&D to pilot plant and supports scale up of processes to manufacturing. The R&D fermentation and recovery group has been heavily involved in almost all projects and contributes significantly to reaching project targets and the goals of the Enzyme Roadmap. It is critical to have a group leader to lead and drive this group to achieve successful production of deliverables.

Fermentation Manager (1603026)

You need to be a hardworking, technically proficient, enthusiastic bioprocess scientist to self-sufficiently manage the R&D fermentation and recovery group for enzyme expression and production. You will collaborate with project leaders and other group leaders to achieve project goals while supporting BPD and product scale up to manufacturing.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a global multidisciplinary team in a challenging and dynamic environment.

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Organize and lead a team of scientists and technicians to achieve successful production of deliverables with efficiency and adherence to priorities, time milestones and completion dates for projects.
- Develop fermentation processes for recombinant enzymes, expressed in bacterial, yeast and fungal hosts.
- Develop downstream processes to efficiently recover recombinant enzymes produced in microbial systems.
- Provide troubleshooting support for commercial manufacturing operations, and refinement of scale down models.
- Interact closely with Pilot Plant and Manufacturing to ensure processes transfer from R&D to commercial operations.
- Work closely with colleagues globally within BASF to ensure knowledge sharing and technology transfer.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…
- Requires a Ph.D. Degree in chemical/ biochemical engineering with minimum 5 years of relevant industrial experience, or MS degree in chemical/ biochemical engineering with minimum 10 years relevant industrial experience or BS in chemical/biochemical engineering with 12 years of relevant industrial experience
- Strong technical background and extensive experience in protein production and fermentation process development in multiple microbial systems and and experience in downstream process development such as continuous centrifugation, tangential flow filtration and normal flow filtration
- Expertise in Design of Experiments (DOE) combined with analytical and problem-solving skills
- Direct supervisory experience, leadership and mentoring skills required
- Highly self-motivated and able to work in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced environment, both independently and in a team setting
- Ability and flexibility to travel

Preferred…
- Good understanding of protein biochemistry, microbiology and recombinant protein expression is a plus
- Experience in industrial fermentation scale-up, scale-down and/or process modeling is a plus
- Experience in developing industrial bioprocesses under regulatory jurisdiction (EPA, FDA) is a plus
