Where the Chemistry Happens…

We are seeking an Associate Chemist, Automotive OEM Coatings R&D, to join our Southfield, MI, team.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing new automotive OEM coatings and pigment dispersions used in OEM coatings in the North American automotive market. S/he contributes to the group by performing laboratory work to innovate new technologies and chemistries in the development of next-generation, state-of-the-art OEM coatings, as well as completing technology submissions and approvals from OEMs. The successful candidate must be hands-on, able to work independently and as a member of a team, and able to communicate effectively both internally with various departments (e.g., technical, manufacturing, sales) and externally with customers (e.g., operators, engineers, management). The incumbent must have sound organic/polymer chemistry knowledge and able to apply creative chemistry concepts in coatings materials science.

- Display strong managerial, project management, communication (both verbal and written), and organizational skills.
- Design for Six Sigma and experiments.
- Provide knowledge of Automotive Industry Quality Standards in combination with understanding of customer specifications.
- Implement coating preparation, application, and testing techniques with wet chemistry methods, including polymerization and synthesis.
- Understand and apply coating/polymer characterization methods and film performance attributes.
- Learn new techniques and chemistry from literature (e.g., scientific papers, journals, patents, and presentations) and perform experiments using this new information.
- Absorb patent information while having the freedom to operate and file patent applications as needed.
- Uphold the highest standards of job safety and teamwork.
- Explore new technologies and techniques with a “can do” attitude.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related field required.
- At least 1 year of experience in the field of automotive OEM coatings preferred.
- Experience and breadth in chemistries used in coatings; should include those relating to multiple paint systems and coating layers (e.g., Primers, Topcoats, Color Enamels, Basecoats, and Clearcoats).
