Applications Development Engineer (1801762) – Wyandotte, MI

Where the Chemistry Happens…

The Technology Development organization within our Performance Materials (PM) business unit is seeking a creative and motivated Application Development Engineer to support customer development projects that incorporate any/all PM products. The PM business unit focuses on development, application, production, and technical service of engineering plastics and polyurethane systems with sales into transportation, consumer, industrial, and construction market segments.

The Application Development Engineer will serve as the primary technical interface to select customers and will participate in project phases from ideation and product promotion to part and tooling design and commercial launch. This includes educating customers regarding efficient use of BASF materials, establishing strong and genuine relationships with new and existing BASF customers, attending customer trials, development meetings, launch activities, and troubleshooting visits. Through close customer collaboration, our Application Development Engineering team optimizes design efficiencies, shortens development time, and demonstrates the high value for which BASF is known across every industry in the market. In addition to addressing customer needs, the Application Development Engineer will collaborate with internal BASF CAE/FEA team to participate in or lead internal innovation projects as needed. All of the above will support the business strategies of the Segment Marketing team.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Leveraging your educational background in an engineering discipline preferably mechanical engineering, as well as your experience in a role designing products with engineering plastics, you will be able to assist our customers by providing technical design guidance as well as modifying designs to enhance performance.
- Your excellent understanding of mold flow, structural analysis, simulation, and other relevant CAE tools, will allow you to understand how different parts will perform in real life scenarios
- Your familiarity and experience with filled and unfilled polyamide materials will allow you to convey with conviction how to best use our materials. Any experience with polyurethane systems will broaden your contribution and help to expand the scope of our team.
- Your strong customer relationship skills (e.g., presentation, project leadership, ability to work with all levels from plant operators to engineers to executive leaders) and communication skills will help you educate our customers on product promotions
- Your passion for innovation and entrepreneurial drive will allow you bring creativity to our designs.
- Your ability to lead groups and projects will allow you to lead internal development projects and become a subject matter expert.
