As part of a team the successful applicant will independently operate high pressure laboratory and pilot chemical reactor systems in a BASF pilot plant complex with capacities ranging from a gallon to multiple drums on occasion to support product and process R&D for multiple business groups. Experimental trials may last several shifts so work must be closely coordinated with other technicians and with Research Scientists. Experimental materials produced vary but are typically for the urethane, consumer, and synthetic lubricant markets. Raw materials used may include toxic, flammable, and corrosive materials. Objectives or priorities may vary from day to day.

Applicant will be responsible for:
- safe handling and accurate measurement of all chemical ingredients ranging from grams to kilograms
- accurately and safely following written and verbal instructions but also solving unexpected problems that arise to meet trial objectives.
- adhering to BASF Safe Work practices, maintaining excellent area housekeeping, proactively supporting and improving the local safety program through participation and suggestions.
- interfacing with control systems to ensure required process conditions are met including minor programming
- clearly recording observations and process readings, safely and properly collecting samples
- completing record keeping include electronic process data reports and database maintenance
- completing basic chemical lab tests such as pH or simple titrations, submitting samples for analysis when appropriate
- communicating status and results of operations and equipment to other technicians, research scientists and engineers verbally and in written reports
- troubleshooting and correcting equipment malfunctions when possible, interfacing with maintenance when needed, and properly preparing and isolating equipment for maintenance and issuing work permits.
- Reviewing, updating, and occasionally writing operating procedures & JSA's and training others as needed.
- Providing suggestions to improve quality and efficiency of trials, procedures, and general operations.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Qualifications
- HS Diploma with 3+ experience with reactive chemistry in pilot or production plant or synthesis laboratory. Or Associates Degree or certification in Chemistry or related field with practical laboratory or pilot plant experience is required.
- Working knowledge of chemical equations, reactive chemistry, pH, and physical chemistry effects on materials required.
- Prior experience with computer based process control systems and Microsoft based programs (Excel, Access, Word) including file transfer and organization required
- Must be able to lift 20 Kg, handle 55-gal drums on occasion.
- Willing to handle OSHA hazardous materials including mutagens, carcinogens, developmental toxins
- Must have flexibility to adapt to changing work schedules and functional areas from week to week with frequent afternoon shift requirements and occasional midnight shift and overtime requirements.
- Familiarity with P&IDs, PFDs, PHA, HAZOPs (or similar), Management of Change, SDS desired
- Knowledge and experience with process control, interlocks, pumps, vacuum jets desired
- Safe chemical handling certification and ability to operate Fork Lift desired
