Technical Service Engineer I - Plastics (1604233)

You will be part of the Performance Materials business and responsible for delivering commercially developed innovative plastic material and processing solutions for our regional and global customers in support of the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) engineering plastics product lines to our customers. You will make material selections, support new projects, resolve quality issues and or productivity issues in the use of our products of performance materials.

You will function in a collaborative manner across our overall matrix business, technical teams, our sales and marketing teams as well as other colleagues in the industry and across other organizations. You will, also, at times, perform hands-on work for technical projects in our processing labs and at the customers. In many cases this role is involved at the beginning of a project for technical consultation and is always a part of the end stage - production of plastic parts at the customers’ manufacturing sites.

Formula for Success: You Will…
- Provide daily on-site customer technical support for material selection part design, processing and tooling on new programs to minimize issues in the use of our materials. Each capital tooling program is expensive and most always is in the six figure range and the advice provided on each is critical to avoid cost and timing to the customer and BASF.
- Conduct the required processing trials at the customers' facilities providing detailed call reports and working in a safe manner. Create physical property and processing data for new or existing products.
- Provide the data and information in a detailed format to get decisions made to obtain final part approvals and closures from the ultimate customers.
- Possess knowledge of plastics products and test methods to be able to recommend materials to specifiers and processors. Work with certification agencies such as UL, NSF, etc. to manage and maintain BASF product certifications.
- Develop with the customer world class process parameters for optimum performance in quality and productivity for use in the production of plastic parts using BASF products.
- Utilize knowledge of equipment operation required for our products into process equipment machinery and additional secondary operations as required.
- Investigate customer issues using problem solving techniques such as Six Sigma methodology to get at root cause on the challenging and complex issues internally and externally. You will be the champion internally for the customer’s issues or needs with manufacturing, quality, R&D as related to use of our materials or processing.
- Create detailed customer call reports, concise technical reports and any additional technical documentation required to the customers and internally for a clear picture on issues, project status and program closure.
- Develop broad, diverse relationships at assigned customers such as OEM’s Tiers and processors.
- Develop and maintain relationships with outside third party technical suppliers such as design firms, tool makers, and processors to network and provide advice and direction for use of our products.
- Work on Innovation teams, such as our advanced development group providing technical expertise where new ideas in tooling methods and processing are a challenge to incorporate in the projects. Also provide important technical information along with suggestions for modifications to our BASF R&D team, product management and quality on how to improve existing or new products. Coordinate all efforts in tandem with sales, development, production, & QA teams.
- Facilitate the technical teams involved and if needed, identify and coordinate the additional resources required to resolve issues of the closure of the programs.
- Understand the innovative trends in the technology and investigate to be able to deliver new to our customers. Stay current with advancing innovative technology internally and externally to be able to translate them with customers, thus enabling us to maintain our leadership position in the industry.
- Provide tailored technical education / training courses in plastics processing for our customers and new colleagues.
- Manage projects to schedules and track all programs via Excel or Gantt charts.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline with 7 years’ minimum experience in plastic processing or a Master’s degree with 5 years of experience required; concentration in Plastics is preferred.
- Plastics processing expertise with Elastomeric materials with injection molding and extrusion with film and blow molding expertise a plus.
- Analytical thinker capable of identifying problems and developing a strategy to resolve them. Working knowledge of Six Sigma tools and methods to troubleshoot and provide root cause resolutions to solving material, machine and equipment problems.
- Material knowledge to support formulation development for new products working in conjunction with the R&D teams. In addition, be able to recommend products for new applications based on design and the end use requirements in balancing BASF capabilities with customer needs.
- Excellent communication skills required in the following areas: verbal, technical writing, presenting, negotiating, and networking, creating call reports, detailed process instructions and effective guide lines for use of our TPU materials.
- Confident and capable ability to communicate your position with suggestions for changes and improvements and getting others to adopt them in difficult and challenging situations.
- Highly motivated self-directed with a sense of urgency. Possess initiative and drive for constant self-improvement in quality and performance. Exhibits team behavior in all facets of the business performing in a matrix environment and Six Sigma environments.
